Word Unscrambler

Enter any letters and instantly unscramble them into every valid English word. Results include Scrabble and Words With Friends point values. Supports blank tiles, all word lengths, and three major dictionaries.

What Is a Word Unscrambler?

A word unscrambler is a tool that takes a set of letters — typically from a Scrabble rack, a word game hand, or a scrambled puzzle — and finds every valid English word that can be formed from some or all of those letters. Unlike an anagram solver (which uses every letter exactly once), a word unscrambler finds words of all lengths, including shorter words that use only a subset of your letters.

Enter seven Scrabble tiles and the unscrambler returns not just 7-letter bingo plays but also every 6-letter, 5-letter, 4-letter, 3-letter, and 2-letter word hidden within those tiles — giving you the complete picture of every possible play available from your rack.

How to Unscramble Words — Complete Guide

Basic Use

Type your letters into the search box above and click Unscramble. Results appear instantly, grouped by word length from longest to shortest. Each word chip shows the word plus its Scrabble point value. Click any word to copy it to your clipboard.

Blank Tile Support

Playing Scrabble or Words With Friends with a blank tile? Type ? for each blank in your rack entry. The unscrambler treats each ? as a wildcard that can represent any letter, finding every word the blank could complete. Most players have one or two blanks at most — the unscrambler handles both simultaneously.

Advanced Filters (Options Panel)

Open the Options panel below the search bar for powerful filtering:

  • Dictionary — choose between NWL (US Scrabble), SOWPODS (International Scrabble), or ENABLE (Words With Friends). Different dictionaries accept different words — always use the dictionary that matches your game.
  • Scores for — toggle between Scrabble scoring and Words With Friends scoring. Tile values differ between the two games — our tool calculates both correctly.
  • Starts with — filter to words beginning with specific letters. Use this when a letter is already fixed on the board and you need to hook onto it.
  • Ends with — filter to words ending with specific letters. Use this when you are playing before an existing word on the board.
  • Must include — filter to words containing a specific letter. Use this when you need to use a high-value tile that is sitting on a bonus square.
  • Word length — filter to words of an exact length. Use this for Jumble puzzles, Wordle, crosswords, or any puzzle with a fixed answer length.
  • Sort by — sort results by length (default), Scrabble score (highest first), or alphabetically. Score sort is the fastest way to find your best Scrabble play.

Word Unscrambler for Scrabble

Scrabble is the most common reason people use a word unscrambler. You have seven tiles on your rack, a crowded board with limited space, and 30 seconds on the clock. Enter your rack letters here — the unscrambler shows every valid play from your tiles, sorted by score so the best play is always at the top.

Pro Rack Entry Tips for Scrabble

  • Add a board letter to your rack entry. If an E is sitting on the board adjacent to where you want to play, add E to your 7-letter rack entry (making it 8 letters). The unscrambler finds words that use that board letter as part of the word — dramatically expanding your options.
  • Use the Starts With and Ends With filters together. If you can only play in a specific direction and must hook onto a board letter at both ends, use both filters simultaneously to find valid through-words.
  • Look at 7-letter results first. When the unscrambler finds a 7-letter word, that is a bingo opportunity worth 50 bonus points. Check if there is a valid placement on the board before looking at shorter words.
  • Check 2-letter words last. When the board is congested and no long word fits, look at the 2-letter results. A 2-letter word on a Triple Letter Score square can score more than a 5-letter word in a standard position.

Word Unscrambler for Words With Friends

Words With Friends uses a different dictionary (ENABLE) and different tile values from Scrabble. To get accurate WWF results:

  1. Enter your tiles as normal
  2. Open Options
  3. Set Dictionary to ENABLE
  4. Set Scores for to Words With Friends
  5. Click Unscramble

Results now show valid WWF words with accurate WWF point values. Note that some words valid in Scrabble are not accepted in WWF and vice versa — the dictionary setting matters significantly.

Word Unscrambler for Wordle

Use the word unscrambler for Wordle in two ways:

  • When you know all five letters but not the order: Enter the five confirmed letters, set word length to 5, and every valid 5-letter arrangement is your candidate list.
  • When you know some letters and their positions: Enter the confirmed letters, set word length to 5, and use Starts With or Ends With for green letters in fixed positions. Add yellow letters to Must Include. For the most powerful clue-based solve, use our dedicated Wordle Helper which accepts full green/yellow/grey clue input.

Understanding Word Unscrambler Results

Results Grouped by Length

By default, results are grouped from longest to shortest word. This prioritises bingo opportunities (7-letter words worth 50 bonus points) and high-scoring longer plays before showing shorter backup options.

Score Badges

Every word chip displays a gold score badge showing its Scrabble or WWF point value. This is the base word value before any board multipliers. On a Double Word Score square, double it. On a Triple Word Score, triple it.

Score Breakdown Tooltip

Hover over any word chip to see a letter-by-letter score breakdown — for example CRANE shows C(3) + R(1) + A(1) + N(1) + E(1) = 7 pts. This helps you understand which letters contribute the most value and plan your board placement accordingly.

Click to Copy

Click any word chip to copy the word to your clipboard instantly. The chip flashes green to confirm the copy was successful.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the word unscrambler free?

Yes — completely free, no sign-up required, no word limits, no premium tier. Enter as many letter combinations as you like.

How many letters can I enter?

Up to 15 letters. For Scrabble (7 tiles) and Words With Friends (7 tiles) this covers your full rack with room to add board letters. For longer crossword word searches the 15-letter limit accommodates most puzzle answers.

Does the unscrambler work on mobile?

Yes — fully mobile-optimised. The input field, results, and all filter controls work on iOS and Android. Open it in your phone browser alongside your word game.

Why does my word not appear in results?

Three reasons: (1) the word is not in the selected dictionary — try switching to SOWPODS for the largest word set; (2) the word uses letters not available in your entry; (3) the word length filter is set to a length that excludes your word. Remove all filters and try again.

Can I use this as a Scrabble cheat?

In casual games yes — many players use word tools to learn new words and improve their vocabulary. In official tournament Scrabble, external word assistance is not permitted during play. Our tool is most valuable as a learning and practice resource.
